Getting There
A short and seamless journey took us from Northern Virginia to the Caribbean, flying direct from Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). The moment we landed, the warm tropical breeze welcomed us, hinting at the incredible experiences ahead.
What to Bring
Puerto Rico is a US territory, all that was necessary a driver license to rent a car.
Getting Around
Upon arrival, we picked up a Hertz rental car equipped with GPS—our key to exploring the island at our own pace.
Our first stop: Isla Verde, where we spent three nights in a beachfront Airbnb condo. This up-and-coming tourist hotspot offered the best of both worlds—secluded from the crowds of Old San Juan but alive with local energy. The beach was a vibrant scene, bustling with boogie boarders, beach volleyball games, family picnics, and the sounds of local music floating through the air.
Discovering Puerto Rico
Historic Charm and Culinary Delights
A one-hour drive led us to Ponce, a city bursting with colonial charm, colorful architecture, and a glimpse into Puerto Rico’s rich past. Here, schoolchildren in crisp uniforms strolled along historic streets, adding to the timeless atmosphere.
Back near Isla Verde, we indulged in Puerto Rico’s famous lechón—succulent, slow-roasted pork, perfectly seasoned and crispy on the outside. A must-visit was the Bacardi Rum Distillery, where a 45-minute tour took us through the art of rum-making. For just $15, we enjoyed a complimentary Bacardi cocktail and took home a souvenir glass—a small token of our flavorful journey.
A Hidden Caribbean Gem
Next, we ventured to La Ceiba, where a 15-minute Air Flamenco flight transported us to a dreamlike paradise—Culebra Island. Skipping the hour-long ferry ride, we arrived quickly and settled into our villa on Flamenco Beach, known for its pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters.
Flamenco Beach was straight out of a postcard. Some sections had gentle, shallow waters, perfect for snorkeling among vibrant marine life. Other stretches of the shore invited peaceful relaxation, where the only sounds were the rhythmic waves and occasional laughter of beachgoers.
The Final Adventure
For the last leg of our journey, we checked into Gran Melia Golf Resort, a luxurious retreat nestled in nature. Our final days were spent hiking the trails of El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. The La Mina Trail, winding through lush greenery and leading to a cascading waterfall, was an absolute highlight.
