Exploring Puerto Rico: A Journey of Sun, Sand, and Culture

Thanks to the convenience of modern travel services, we planned an unforgettable trip to Puerto Rico without ever leaving the comfort of home. With a few clicks, we were on our way to an island paradise rich in history, adventure, and breathtaking landscapes.

Getting There

A short and seamless journey took us from Northern Virginia to the Caribbean, flying direct from Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). The moment we landed, the warm tropical breeze welcomed us, hinting at the incredible experiences ahead.

What to Bring

Puerto Rico is a US territory, all that was necessary a driver license to rent a car.

Getting Around

Upon arrival, we picked up a Hertz rental car equipped with GPS—our key to exploring the island at our own pace.

Our first stop: Isla Verde, where we spent three nights in a beachfront Airbnb condo. This up-and-coming tourist hotspot offered the best of both worlds—secluded from the crowds of Old San Juan but alive with local energy. The beach was a vibrant scene, bustling with boogie boarders, beach volleyball games, family picnics, and the sounds of local music floating through the air.

Discovering Puerto Rico

Historic Charm and Culinary Delights

A one-hour drive led us to Ponce, a city bursting with colonial charm, colorful architecture, and a glimpse into Puerto Rico’s rich past. Here, schoolchildren in crisp uniforms strolled along historic streets, adding to the timeless atmosphere.

Back near Isla Verde, we indulged in Puerto Rico’s famous lechón—succulent, slow-roasted pork, perfectly seasoned and crispy on the outside. A must-visit was the Bacardi Rum Distillery, where a 45-minute tour took us through the art of rum-making. For just $15, we enjoyed a complimentary Bacardi cocktail and took home a souvenir glass—a small token of our flavorful journey.

A Hidden Caribbean Gem

Next, we ventured to La Ceiba, where a 15-minute Air Flamenco flight transported us to a dreamlike paradise—Culebra Island. Skipping the hour-long ferry ride, we arrived quickly and settled into our villa on Flamenco Beach, known for its pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters.

Flamenco Beach was straight out of a postcard. Some sections had gentle, shallow waters, perfect for snorkeling among vibrant marine life. Other stretches of the shore invited peaceful relaxation, where the only sounds were the rhythmic waves and occasional laughter of beachgoers.

The Final Adventure

For the last leg of our journey, we checked into Gran Melia Golf Resort, a luxurious retreat nestled in nature. Our final days were spent hiking the trails of El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. The La Mina Trail, winding through lush greenery and leading to a cascading waterfall, was an absolute highlight.

Our Journey to the San Diego Beach & Bay Half Marathon

Week 7: The Last Long Run—No Wind, No Worries, Just Will   The sunrise painted the sky at 6:30am, but we didn’t rush. We savored the quiet morning before stepping into our final training run—12 kilometers, a route that’s become muscle memory: Crown Point to De Anza Cove, Mission Bay, SeaWorld, and back. It was still, almost too still. No sea breeze, no cooling wind. Just the soft rhythm of our feet and the hum of anticipation. I felt flat-footed today—each step heavier than the last—wrapped in my usual gear like a well-padded veteran. Meanwhile, Michelle moved effortlessly, light on her feet, gliding like the breeze we didn’t have. We wrapped it up at Yipao Coffee, our ritual celebration—cappuccino for me, iced oat milk latte for her. Next week is the big one. The San Diego Beach & Bay Half Marathon. No more countdowns. Just the start line ahead.   Week 6: Pushing Limits, Fighting Pain, and Closing in on Race Day Two weeks to go until the half marathon. No turning back no...

Into the Wild: A New Zealand Adventure

This past holiday season, Michelle and I decided to break away from the familiar. Instead of the usual family gatherings in Bay Area, we packed our bags for New Zealand—a land of rugged beauty, epic adventures, and just enough unpredictability to keep us on our toes. Little did we know, this trip would push us out of our comfort zones and into the heart of an unforgettable adventure. The Start of Something Big We left San Diego with excitement buzzing in the air, cruising up to Los Angeles for a late-night flight. Parking was smooth- thankfully, I’d planned ahead- and soon we were boarding a 12-hour journey to the land of the long white cloud. As we flew across the Pacific, I kept imagining the landscapes ahead: towering mountains, roaring waterfalls, and surreal geothermal pools. Michelle, ever the planner, was busy double-checking our packed itinerary. We touched down in Auckland mid-morning, and the adventure began right away. After grabbing a rental car and stocking up on snacks, w...

A Day of Survival: Hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is known as one of the world’s best day hikes, celebrated for its breathtaking views of volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes, and vast valleys stretching as far as the eye can see. On a perfect summer day, hikers marvel at the serenity of the glistening peaks and colorful crater lakes. But the day we chose to tackle it? It was anything but perfect. We arrived in Auckland on a warm December morning, the buzz of summer in the air. The journey from San Diego had been long, but the excitement of adventure quickly revived us. After picking up our rental Kia SUV from Hertz, we made a quick stop at Pak’nSave to stock up on provisions for the hike: trail mix, energy bars, electrolyte drinks and plenty of water. Our hotel for the night, the Hilton Auckland, offered a stunning waterfront view. That evening, we dined at Ahi, indulging in the best of New Zealand’s cuisine—a perfect prelude to our upcoming adventure. The next day, we hit the road toward Tongariro Nationa...
